Professional Credentials
Susan Conger grew up studying classical violin, and as an adult was drawn to the fiddle tunes she heard while contradancing.
Susan has taught fiddle at Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp repeatedly since 1991, and at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina since 2000.
Locally, she has been the fiddle instructor at "Strings@Amherst" since 2015, and taught fiddle classes at Artspace in Greenfield for several years. She teaches private lessons in fiddle and classical violin in her Greenfield (MA) studio.
She edited the Along the River collection of dance tunes, and some of her own compositions are widely played and much recorded.

Teacher Comments:
I truly love teaching! It's a delight to share the joy of making music, and to discover the approach that is most helpful for each individual student.
When students or their parents comment about my teaching style, the words I hear most often are "patient" and "encouraging."
I teach children (age 7 and up) and adults. Many of my adult students are returning to the instrument after letting it lay fallow for decades, or are finally pursuing a long-deferred dream to learn to play fiddle/violin.

I believe Suzuki method has the best approach to investigating musical skills balanced with each individual student's unique personality.
I do enjoy playing folk, bluegrass, and rock, and I introduce those styles as part of a student's exploration, but I consider myself primarily a classical teacher.

- I teach intermediate to advanced students of any age.
- I grew up in the Suzuki method (and studied for a summer with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki), but I don't teach strictly in that style.
- For beginners and younger children, I recommend studying with a certified Suzuki teacher.
- My teaching approach is holistic, and I focus on finding balance between technique, musicality, physical comfort, discipline, confidence, and finding joy in the act of playing.
- My aim is to be supportive, encouraging, and inspirational; to strengthen technical foundation in order to serve the greater purpose of self-expression and creativity through music.
- Feel free to contact me for a trial lesson, or for more information.
