Johannes Toth is generally considered to be one of the best Hungarian violinmakers of all time.


He was born in 1875 and established in Budapest in 1910. He is known for precise craftsmanship and a warm, luscious tone. He experimented with various varnish recipes and colors, but he did not consider varnish to be essential to finding a good tone. He had strong opinions about what constitutes a good violin and published his findings in various publications. He died in 1944.
