Label "Gilkes" (from Foster's)

$50,000.00

Branded "Gilkes" inside back. Signed internally. #7106

Samuel Gilkes (1787 - 1827) worked for William Forster until 1810 when he established his own workshop. He is known particularly for his cellos, which were modeled on both Amati and Stradivari patterns. His choice of wood was excellent, and the quality of his varnish is outstanding.

This cello is branded on the interior in several places and is signed by the maker on the underside of the top. This is truly an outstanding example of one of England's greatest makers of cellos.

Claude Victor Rambaux, Paris, 1854

$50,000.00

Rambaux was born in 1802 in Darney (Vosges), and died in Mirecourt in 1871. He worked with Thibout at Caen, and Francois Gand in Paris before establishing his own workshop in Paris in 1838. This cello from 1854 has comfortable sloping shoulders, making it quite comfortable to play. The varnish is reminiscent of Gand with the deep reddish color. The cello is fully restored and has a rich, penetrating sound.
