When
Stamell Stringed Instruments opened on April 13, 1989, Molly
Stamell was still several weeks from being born. Her first
months were spent on a blanket underneath her father Matt’s
workbench at the new shop, spruce and maple shavings falling
down beside her. She started playing the cello at age 3, then
switched to the violin. Her training on violin continued for
many years; she started playing fiddle music by the age of
10, and continues to play to this day. She is now 18 years
old, about to go to college.
As a
gift, Matt made a guitar for Molly. Matt began his career
in instruments as a guitar builder and repairman. It has been
20 years since Matt last made a guitar.
Here
are some photos of the guitar, of Matt making it, and of Molly
through the years.
We hope
you enjoy them.
The guitar
is a slightly scaled down version of the one Matt made for
himself a long time ago. The string length has been shortened,
and the upper bout made a bit smaller. The back and sides
are made from Hawaiian Koa wood that Matt has had for almost
30 years. The top is of old spruce, and the neck is of mahogany.
The hummingbird on the fretboard is for Molly, who is about
to fly the nest for a University in Montreal, Canada.
