Stamell Stringed Instruments was founded in
1989 by Matt Stamell, a
trained luthier and musician. Matt attended Hobart College, where he
first discovered the art of instrument making. Upon graduation, he
enrolled in the Program in Artisanry at Boston University, where he
studied with Master Luthier Donald Warnock. From 1982 to 1989, Matt
worked in the Boston area; during that time he also attended the Violin
Craftsmanship Institute at the University of New Hampshire.
Stamell Strings opened as a full service violin shop in 1989, and
has grown to employ full and part time workers, including graduates of
the North Bennett St. Violin making program, as well as makers and
players from a variety of backgrounds.
Matt is a
member of the Violin Society of America, and Appraiser's
Association of America.

SHOP
NEWS: Spring 2010
Happy Spring!
In shop news, we welcome Troy Harris to our Poughkeepsie workshop. Troy
is a trained and skilled violin-restorer and a very skilled mandolin
maker. We have taken additional space right next to our Poughkeepsie
shop to make room for his extensive workshop.
Andrew Gaybaryan and Shirley White continue to work at our Amherst
location. Shirley just finished restoring a Joseph Gagliano violin from
1780. The violin was in restoration for a year, and is currently for
sale. (attach pix)
Andrew has sold instruments to some notable musicians this year,
including violinist Frank Peter Zimmerman. Here is a link to the Stolz
Quartet where you can hear violinist Peter Brunt playing Andrew’s
violin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnrRiU7916I.
------------
Violin making is alive and well at Stamell Stringed Instruments:
RODNEY MILLER continues to make wonderful instruments for us from his
New Hampshire studio. The “Rodney Miller Series” remains the best
workshop made instrument in its price range to be found anywhere. These
are instruments roughed out for us in Germany, and graduated and
finished by Rodney. The sound compares to instruments many times more
expensive. “Rodney Miller, New Hampshire” is fully hand made by Rodney,
start to finish. With over 30 years of experience, Mr. Miller is one of
the most talented violin makers working today.
ANDREW GAYBARYAN is finding fame among classical musicians world wide.
His instruments are currently played in the Boston Symphony Orchestra,
and by soloists such as Frank Peter Zimmermann, Peter Brunt, and have
been praised by such players as Kim Kashkashian, Roman Tottenberg, and
Anner Bylsma. Stamell Stringed Instruments is proud to have some of
Mr.Gaybaryan’s instruments available for trial. Andrew also continues
to do repair work in our workshop.
SHIRLEY WHITE is a master violin restorer, and has recently turned some
of her attention to violin making. Currently, Shirley is making a copy
of the “Titian” Strad from 1714. Shirley handles most of the major
restoration for Stamell Stringed Instruments.
MATT STAMELL is just completing a copy of the “Viotti” Strad of 1709.
Matt has made numerous guitars and has over 30 years of repair and
restoration experience. This is his first violin, and the violin is
available for trial at the shop.
TROY HARRIS is currently making several violins from our workshop in
Poughkeepsie NY. Troy is a master mandolin maker, violin restorer and
violin maker. His instruments are based on both Stradivari and
Guarneri, and are currently in process.
ROGER TREAT makes wonderful violin, viola, and cello bows from his
studio in Vermont. Roger continues to do all of our bow work at Stamell
Stringed Instruments, and is available each Thursday at the Amherst
shop. A selection of his bows are often available for trial and upon
request at our Amherst location.
Our motto has long been “a continuing commitment to excellence in
stringed instrument craftsmanship”. It is still true today.
