Stamell Stringed Instruments was founded in 1989 by Matt Stamell, a trained luthier and musician. Matt attended Hobart College, where he first discovered the art of instrument making. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the Program in Artisanry at Boston University, where he studied with Master Luthier Donald Warnock. From 1982 to 1989, Matt worked in the Boston area; during that time he also attended the Violin Craftsmanship Institute at the University of New Hampshire.
Stamell Strings opened as a full service violin shop in 1989, and has grown to employ full and part time workers, including graduates of the North Bennett St. Violin making program, as well as makers and players from a variety of backgrounds.
Matt is a member of the Violin Society of America, and Appraiser's Association of America.
